In times of crisis and economic insecurity, rates of child abuse and neglect increase. However, reports to Missouri’s Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline have declined dramatically during the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. When children stay at home, they are isolated from places where adults often look out for their safety and well-being including schools, child care facilities, places of worship and other public areas.
This can be a very stressful and scary time for families, and frustration levels can be at an all-time high. We're all in this together and as a community, it's our jobs to support each other during times of crisis. Be sure to check in on those you love and offer any support that you can while remaining safe. A quick phone call could make all the difference in someone's day.
Help us raise awareness. Awareness and advocacy are critical to child abuse prevention and intervention. You can help raise awareness by sharing this page, the resources below, and by liking and sharing our posts on social media.
You are essential to child safety during this time. Below, you will find information on how to recognize that a child is unsafe and respond. These resources are designed for essential workers serving on the ground to keep our communities running during the COVID-19 crisis, school professionals during this time of virtual learning, and the general public.
· Trust your gut: If something does not look, sound or feel safe – report.
· Making a report is asking for help and services: When you report suspected abuse or neglect, you are asking for a professional to help a child and their family. You do not need proof. You are not making an accusation.
· You may be the only person to act: During these times of isolation, do not assume that someone else has already made the call. Get in touch with Children’s Division and let them know you are concerned. Anonymous reports are accepted.
· For school professionals working with kids virtually: Remember your role as a mandated reporter and check in with students to let them know you remain a supportive, caring adult in their lives.
